Bible and money! As a Christian, have you considered what God wants you to do with money?

Money matters to God. Where it comes from, what He wants you to do with it and what you will gain. The Lord has a lot to say to you in the Bible about money.

The purpose of this post is to talk about obeying God’s commands regarding what He wants you to do with money, regardless of whether you are wealthy or not.

It will go into depth about God and money and anything involving, having to do with, or having an effect on money and family or personal finances.

Obeying God’s command concerning what He wants you to do with money, regardless of whether you are rich or poor is important for you spiritually and materially.

God may give you a small amount of money or a large amount, but do you know what He wants you to do with it?

Did you know that there are many verses about money in the Bible?

So, we will use many scriptures about money to talk about what the Bible says about money.

What is Money

Money is a means of exchange that functions as a legal tender to buy goods and services. It is a country’s official currency in the form of paper or coins.

You can buy something, exchange something, or pay a debt with money.

You can use money to acquire things instead of having to trade or barter physical things.

Money has no soul or life. It cannot act on its own.

Money can be a good or dangerous tool. This depends on who is holding it. The Bible warns about the love of money in 1 Timothy 6:10. You can learn more about this in our blog: the love of money is a root of all evils.

Who Does Money Belong To & Who Gives You Money

Here are two important questions:

  1. Who does money belong to?
  2. Who gives you money?

Well, the most important thing to keep in mind is that God, our Father in heaven, owns everything.

We own nothing. Yes, nothing belongs to us. God owns everything, including us.

God said in Haggai 2:8,

‘The silver is mine, and the gold is mine,’ says the Lord All-Powerful.

The Bible says,

And in Psalms 24:1 it says,

“The earth and everything in it belong to the Lord. The world and all its people belong to Him.”

Psalms 50:12 tells us that the earth and everything in it belong to God.

These scriptures make it very clear that God created all things, and all things belong to Him. And this includes money.

How did God create all things?

Did God create all things directly or did He use someone to create them?

The Bible answers this question in Colossians 1:15-16. It says,

“Christ is the visible likeness of the invisible God. He is the first-born Son, superior to all created things. For through him God created everything in heaven and on earth, the seen and the unseen things, including spiritual powers, lords, rulers, and authorities. God created the whole universe through him and for him.”

So, with all this in mind, it is clear that God is the one who gives you money and He does it through Christ.

You may have thoughts like “I worked hard for my money.”

Generally we like to think and talk about “our money” or “my money”, “our possessions” and so on.

Some of us even like to boast about what we have, what we bought, and what we did. Sadly, we are forgetting the one who made it possible for us to have these things.

Do you really know who owns your money? Learn more about this here.

The Bible says in Deuteronomy 8:18,

“You might say to yourself, ‘I am rich because of my own strength and power.’ But remember the Lord your God! It is he who gives you the power to become rich. He keeps the agreement he promised to your ancestors. So it is today.”

The Bible also says that although our Lord Jesus was rich, He left His riches and became poor so that through His poverty we may become rich.

“You know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. You know that Christ was rich, but for you he became poor. Christ did this so that by his being poor you might become rich.” 2 Corinthians 8:9

Child of the Most High God, you are just a manager of the money God has entrusted into your hands. He expects you to use the wisdom of Christ in how you spend His money. God gives you the money and it belongs to Him.

Eight Reasons Why God Gives You Money

These are 8 reasons why God gives you money?

Gift
Gift

1. As a Gift to Bless You

God can give you money as a gift.

Though He gives it to you as a gift, He will watch you to see how you use it.

He wants you to enjoy the gift in a godly way and use it as a tool to help people and do other good things.

God will test you. If you show yourself to be a reliable person for Him to continue giving monetary gifts, He will give you more. Jesus said,

“Whoever is faithful in small matters will be faithful in large ones; whoever is dishonest in small matters will be dishonest in large ones.” Luke 16:10.

2. To Accomplish His Purposes on Earth

God can give you money because He wants you to use it to carry out His plans on earth.

Many times, God works through humans in the physical realm to carry out His plans and purposes on earth. This is because He is Spirit.

This is why Jesus had to come to the earth in the form of a man to save mankind.

God the Father needed Jesus to come down from heaven to the earth, and Jesus willingly chose to come.

Jesus said in John 4:34 that His food is to obey the will of the One who sent Him and to finish the work that He gave Him to do.

Jesus finished the specific work God gave Him to do while He was on earth. And then, He declared that it was finished when His blood was shed and He died on the cross for us.

After rising from death, He gave us a special work to continue doing till He comes back. He said,

“Go, then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples: baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And I will be with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20

To carry out this special work requires a lot of money. So God provides His money to His people so that they would use it to accomplish this task and other things He wants them to do on earth.

3. Because He is a God of Covenant

Another reason God can give you money is because He made a covenant with our ancestors Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. This covenant still stands until today.

The Bible says in Deuteronomy 8:17-18,

“You might say to yourself, ‘I am rich because of my own strength and power.’ But remember the Lord your God! It is he who gives you the power to become rich. He keeps the agreement he promised to your ancestors. So it is today.

4. For You to Manage and Invest

Money Growing

You are a steward or manager who God has given some of His money. So, you must take care of what He has entrusted into your hands.

Spend and invest His money in ways that delight Him. It is a responsibility that you should not take lightly.

Always ask God, “Lord how do you want me to use Your money and resources?” He will tell you and lead you every time.

Consider this story about how to use money that Jesus told in Matthew 25:14-30.

In the story, Jesus told about a man who gave three of his servants different amounts of money to look after while the man was away.

When the man came back, two of the servants told him that they used the money well and made more money. They invested the money and made a profit. The master gave them a reward for their good work.

The third servant told the man that he hid the man’s money. He did not make more money or gain any interest. The man punished this servant very severely.

The Bible says,

“A person who is trusted with something must show that he is worthy of that trust.” 1 Corinthians 4:2

God gives you money because He trusts you to manage and invest it well.

You will have to prove that you are worthy of His trust, so He will test you.

You will have to give an account to Him about the things, including money, He entrusted into your hands to do for Him.

5. God Gives You Money to Supply Your Needs

As a Christian who is obedient and follows God’s principles in His word, God promises to provide you with what you need. This will be different for everyone because only God knows best what a person needs.

Apostle Paul said to Philippian Christians,

“My God will use his wonderful riches in Christ Jesus to give you everything you need.” Philippians 4:19

Here are some examples from the word of God about things you need:

  • Money to enjoy – “Command those who are rich in the things of this life not to be proud, but to place their hope, not in such an uncertain thing as riches, but in God, who generously gives us everything for our enjoyment.” 1 Timothy 6:17 (GNB)
  • To leave an inheritance for your grandchildren – “A good man will have wealth to leave to his grandchildren, but the wealth of sinners will go to righteous men.” Proverbs 13:22 (GNB).
  • To take care of your family – “A believer should take care of his own relatives, especially his own family. If he does not do that, he has turned against the faith. He is worse than a person who does not believe in God.” 1 Timothy 5:8 (ICB).

6. God Gives You Money So You Can Share With Others

Sharing

There are many teachings and examples of this in the Bible. Here are some of them:

This is part of what Apostle said Timothy should command rich people to do. He said,

“Command them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share with others.” 1 Timothy 6:18.

Our Lord Jesus said,

“Give, and you will receive. You will be given much. It will be poured into your hands – more than you can hold. You will be given so much that it will spill into your lap. The way you give to others is the way God will give to you.” Luke 6:38.

In 2 Corinthians 9:8 the word of God says,

“And God is able to give you more than you need, so that you will always have all you need for yourselves and more than enough for every good cause.”

And in verse 11 it says,

“He will always make you rich enough to be generous at all times, so that many will thank God for your gifts which they receive from us.”

You can plainly see why giving and helping others is a strong reason why God gives you money.

7. To Lend and Not Borrow

Help Each Other
Help Each Other

While teaching His followers, Jesus said this to them,

“If a person asks you for something, then give it to him. Don’t refuse to give to a person who wants to borrow from you.” Matthew 5:42.

And in Deuteronomy 15:6 the Bible says,

“The Lord your God will bless you as he promised. You will lend to other nations. But you will not need to borrow from them…”

What a blessing this is from God. He can give you money so that you will not have to borrow, but you can lend to others.

8. Equal and Fair Distribution of Wealth

The Holy Spirit has told us many times that there is not a lack of wealth in this world. The problem is that it is not distributed fairly. Wow! Think about that. So why is this so?

There are numerous reasons of which we cannot cover in this post. But let us look at what the Bible says about equal distribution of wealth as it relates to why God gives you money.

Apostle Paul said in 2 Corinthians 8:13-15,

13. “We do not want you to have troubles while other people are at ease. We want everything to be equal.
14. At this time you have plenty. What you have can help others who are in need. Then later, when they have plenty, they can help you when you are in need. Then all will be equal.
15. As it is written in the scriptures, ‘The person who gathered more did not have too much. The person who gathered less did not have too little.’ ”

Our Father in heaven is a just and holy God. He is our creator and knows exactly what we need, when we need them, and how to get them to us. He only asks us to trust Him and obey Him.

So now that we have talked about some of the reasons why God gives you money, let us now talk about how He wants you to think about the money that He gives you.

How God Wants You to Think About Money

The word of God in Romans 12:2 says,

“Do not confirm yourself to the standards of this world, but let God transform you inwardly by a complete change of your mind. Then you will be able to know the will of God – what is good and is pleasing to Him and is perfect.”

As it relates to money, let God change your way of thinking about money and wealth through His word.

Do not allow the way the world thinks about money influence you. Think the way God says you should think.

Thoughts - Mind
Thoughts – Mind

People who belong to the world generally think about money as a weapon to persecute people, to do evil things, to show off and boast, to compare to others, to oppress the poor and do many other evil things.

They pile up wealth for themselves, they do not pay fair wages and they live in luxury and pleasure.

The Lord warns people who think like this about the penalties and sudden miseries that can come upon them for doing these things. You can find it in James 5:1-6.

God wants you to think about money as a tool to enjoy your life, do good things, and do good for other people. God [He] wants you to be generous and ready to share what you have with others. 1 Timothy 6:17-18.

For example, you can feed the hungry, clothe the naked, provide shelter for the homeless, help widows and orphans including other needy people, and propagate the good news about our Lord Jesus Christ and the rulership of God our Father.

Do what Romans 12:2 says and let God transform you from the inside and change your way of thinking about money to the way He wants you to think.

What Does God Want You to Do With Money

Did you know God can use you as a vessel to make money online? And then what does He want you to do with that money?

The first and most important thing that God wants you to do with money is to give active help to others in their troubles just as God helps you in all your troubles. The scripture says in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4,

3. “Let us give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the merciful Father, the God from whom all help comes!u
4. He helps us in all our troubles, so that we are able to help others who have all kinds of troubles, using the same help that we ourselves have received from God.”

And in 1 Timothy 6:18, the Bible commands the rich to help those in need.

“Command them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share with others.”

Let’s put it another way by looking at what Jesus said in Matthew 25:31-40. He explained the benefits of helping those in need. He said if you do these things for others it is the same as doing them to Him:

Basket of Bread
  • Feed the hungry
  • Give drink to the thirsty
  • Take care of the homeless
  • Clothing for the naked
  • Take care of the sick
  • Help those in prison

You can clearly see that what God wants you to do with money is to help those who are in need.

Jesus also said that if you do these things, you will be one of those whom He will reward with an inheritance of the Kingdom which God has prepared for you and His other children from the creation of the world (Matthew 25:34).

Of course, as God blesses you with money, it is your responsibility to ask Him what He wants you to do with it.

As you can see from the list above, the Bible gives clear guidance. It is important for you to communicate with the Lord and He will tell you the specifics of what He wants you to do.

Remember, the most important thing that God wants you to do with money is to give active help to others in their troubles just as God helps you in all your troubles.

But, what about those things God does not want you to do with money. You can check out details of them in our blog titled: what God does not want you to do with money.

Benefits of Doing What God Wants You to Do with Money

So your question might be, what are the benefits of doing all these things?

Well, we are very glad you asked this question. You know Peter asked Jesus the same question.

To illustrate let’s look at the story of a rich young man who came to Jesus and asked Him a question. You can find this story in Mathew 19:16-29 and Mark 10:17-30.

The rich young man asked Jesus what he, the rich young man, must do to be saved.

He had lived a clean life since childhood. He had not committed adultery, he did not steal, he did not tell lies about other people, he did not cheat, and he honored his father and mother.

Jesus told him since he had done all those good things, he should sell all that he had and give the money to the poor and then follow Jesus as a disciple. Then he would have treasure in heaven.

The answer was too hard for the rich young man, so he went away very sad.

It was after the man left that Peter asked Jesus the same question you may be asking right now. In Matthew 19:27, Peter said to Jesus,

“We left everything we had and followed you, so what will we have?”
Victory Crown

Jesus answered Peter and said that everyone who left houses, brothers, sisters, father, mother, children, or farms to follow Him will get much more than they left. And they will have life forever.

So you can see from Jesus’ answer that the benefits are:

  1. Reward in Heaven – Matthew 19:28; Mark 10:21, 30
  2. Eternal Life – Matthew 19:29; Mark 10:30
  3. Plenty of material wealth – Matthew 19:29; Mark 10:29-30
  4. Persecution – Mark 10:30

The Bible also says in 2 Corinthians 8:9 that although our Lord Jesus was rich, He left His riches and became poor so that through His poverty we may become rich.

God will reward you while you are here on earth and when you go to heaven. What a great promise!

Here are some more scriptures that talk about the rewards you receive as an obedient follower of Christ:

Psalms 25:12-14; Proverbs 11:18; Matthew 5:12; Matthew 6:33; Matthew 25:21; Mark 9:41; 1 Corinthians 2:9; Corinthians 15:58; Galatians 6:9; Ephesians 6:8; Colossians 3:23-24; Hebrews 6:10; James 1:12; 1 1 Peter 5:4.
