Best LLC Formation Services for Beginners: How to Choose Optional Filing Help Without Paying for What You Do Not Need

You may have found a $0 LLC formation offer and wondered whether it covers what you need. Before you order, take a little time to understand the service and the bills that may follow.

This guide compares U.S. services for forming a limited liability company (LLC). An LLC is a business structure created under state law. The rules and prices below apply to the United States, not to business registration in other countries.

1. Quick Answer

An LLC formation service helps prepare and submit your business formation papers. You do not have to hire one. You can often file directly with your state.

If you want help, compare the full cost and the support you need. Look beyond a “$0” offer. State fees, registered-agent service, subscriptions, and renewals may still cost money.

Northwest, Bizee, and ZenBusiness offer different combinations of filing help and ongoing services. None is the best choice for everyone.

Check each item before paying. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issues an Employer Identification Number (EIN) for free. Paid EIN help is an optional service.

2. Why This Matters

You may only want someone to file the papers. During checkout, though, you may also be offered a website, mail service, or yearly subscription. Each addition deserves a decision of its own.

When you are starting a business, money spent on unwanted services is money you cannot use elsewhere.

This guide will help you decide which help is worth paying for and when filing yourself may be enough.

3. Before You Compare Services: Do You Need an LLC or Paid Help?

Start with the business itself. Does an LLC suit what you plan to do? A low filing price cannot answer that question.

You need to consider the structure, its costs, and the duties that continue after formation. [1]

If you decide an LLC is appropriate, you can then choose how to file. Do-it-yourself (DIY) filing means you submit the papers directly through the state’s official route.

For a straightforward situation, clear state instructions may give you enough guidance to file yourself. Being a beginner does not mean you must pay.

Give yourself a chance to read those instructions before deciding.

You may still prefer help preparing and submitting the papers. In that case, look for a service that explains what you are buying and how it handles filing problems.

4. What an LLC Formation Service Does—and What It Does Not Do

The basic service usually prepares and submits the state papers that create your LLC. These are often called articles of organization.

The company may also check name availability and give you online access to the documents. [1]

An operating agreement sets out how the LLC is owned and managed. This is one item to look for in the package details.

Some packages include a template; others charge extra or leave it to you.

Submitting formation papers does not settle every business requirement.

You may still need licenses, tax registrations, insurance, or other filings. What applies depends on your business and location. [1]

Filing support has limits. Someone who helps you use an order form is not necessarily advising you on your legal rights.

A standard template may also leave important ownership questions unanswered.

For example, owners who need a special agreement may need a qualified lawyer. A tax question may call for a tax professional.

Buying a larger filing package will not necessarily provide that advice.

5. How to Compare the True Cost

To make the prices easier to compare, separate them into four kinds of cost.

State fees: Money paid to the government for the filing. Hiring a formation company does not normally remove these fees.

Formation service fee: Money charged by the company to prepare and submit your papers. This can be $0 while state fees still apply.

Optional extras: Items such as paid EIN assistance, faster processing, or a business mailing address. Decide whether you need each one.

Ongoing charges: Registered-agent renewals, subscriptions, later filing services, and any state reports or taxes that apply. A renewal is a charge for another period of service.

A U.S. Cost Example: Florida

Florida lists a required $100 filing fee and a required $25 registered-agent fee for a new LLC. Together, these state charges total $125.

The state’s $25 fee is separate from what a commercial registered-agent company charges for its service. [2]

For a simple example, assume you choose a $0 formation service and no paid extras. The required Florida formation charges would still be $125.

A $39 formation service would bring those two cost categories to $164.

These are formation examples, not complete business budgets. Florida also lists a regular LLC annual-report fee of $138.75.

An annual report updates the state’s business records; it is a separate ongoing filing. [2]

Use the same approach for your state: work out what is due now, then add the expected charges over the next two years.

A monthly trial needs attention sooner. Its first bill may arrive well before the LLC’s first anniversary.

6. A Shortlist of LLC Formation Services by Situation

The right choice depends on the help you need. We assessed the services below from their published information. We have not bought or tested these packages ourselves.

We rechecked official provider pages and terms on October 4, 2026. All prices are in U.S. dollars. State fees are extra unless clearly stated otherwise. Offers and terms can change.

Northwest: When You Want Filing Help With Registered-Agent Service

Best fit: A reader who wants formation help and an outside registered agent together.

Northwest currently lists LLC formation at $39 plus state fees.

That price includes the first year of registered-agent service and ongoing customer support. The registered-agent service then costs $125 a year. [3]

Main limitation: The agent renewal is not the only possible future charge. Northwest automatically enrolls registered-agent customers in its separate compliance service.

Compliance means meeting the filing requirements that apply to the business. Its annual-report filing service lists a $100 service fee plus state fees. [4, 5]

If you intend to file later reports yourself, cancel that separate service through your account before it processes a filing or charge.

Turning off automatic payment alone does not cancel a service; Northwest can issue an invoice instead. [4]

Who should look elsewhere: Someone who wants only a filing service with no ongoing services to manage.

If address privacy is your reason for choosing Northwest, get a clear answer about your state’s forms.

Its address service may cover some fields without keeping your home address out of every public record.

Bizee: When a Low Upfront Fee and First-Year Agent Matter

Best fit: A reader who wants basic filing help at a $0 service fee and needs registered-agent service for the first year.

Bizee lists Basic at $0 plus state fees. Standard costs $199 and Premium costs $299, each plus state fees.

Its formation packages include the first year of registered-agent service. The official ongoing agent price is $149 a year. [6, 7]

Basic covers the formation filing and online document access. The order page places EIN assistance and an operating agreement in Standard rather than Basic. [8]

Main limitation: There is more than one service to keep track of. Bizee also offers a first month of virtual-address service with formation.

This is a mailing service, separate from the registered agent, with a listed ongoing price of $29 a month. [9]

Who should wait or look elsewhere: Someone still deciding whether to form an LLC, or who does not want to manage introductory services and renewals.

Be sure you are ready before submitting a Bizee order. Its cancellation window can be short.

Its policy generally stops accepting order cancellations once it sends payment to a government agency or another third party.

While the order is still in Review status, use the confirmation-email change option to put it on hold. The policy does not accept order-cancellation instructions by phone or email. [10]

ZenBusiness: When Weekend Support Is Useful

Best fit: A reader who values phone or chat support on weekends and will review subscriptions carefully.

ZenBusiness lists Saturday and Sunday support from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Central Time. [11]

Starter lists a $0 formation fee plus state fees. It includes name checking, preparation and filing, and electronic documents.

Standard provider processing takes 7–10 business days before state processing. [12]

Main limitation: Starter’s formation fee does not renew, but included offers can.

Worry-Free Compliance is free for the first year, then $199 a year.

The preselected website-builder trial lasts 30 days, then renews at $15 a month. You can remove the trial before buying. [12]

Registered-agent service costs $199 a year separately.

Pro lists $199 a year and Premium $299 a year, plus initial state fees. Starter EIN help and its operating-agreement template each list a $99 extra charge. [13, 12]

Who should look elsewhere: Someone expecting registered-agent service in the base price, or who would prefer a purchase without trial offers to review.

To cancel ZenBusiness registered-agent service, contact support.

Its terms also require proof of an appropriate agent change by the next billing date. You cannot cancel that service entirely online. [14]

What Customer Reviews Add to the Comparison

We checked Trustpilot and the Better Business Bureau (BBB) complaint records for all three providers. Reviews include praise for helpful support, as well as reports of delays or communication problems.

Complaint records also raise billing, cancellation, or filing concerns. [15–20]

One Northwest BBB complaint concerns a home address appearing on a filing. It gives readers a reason to clarify address use before ordering.

ZenBusiness and Bizee records include concerns about renewals and refunds.

These are customer reports, sometimes disputed by the provider. They do not establish what will happen with your order. [16, 18, 20]

Read reviews with your own concerns in mind.

If a complaint raises something you do not understand about your package, put that question to the provider. Keep the written answer with your order details.

7. What “$0 Formation” Really Means

The $0 usually describes the company’s basic formation fee. State charges still apply, and an included service may be free only for a limited period.

At the final order screen, you should be able to explain each charge in your own words. Which amount goes to the state? What will the company do? Which services will bill you again?

A missing price or renewal date is a reason to pause. You can return to the purchase once the provider has answered your question.

8. Registered Agent, EIN, and Compliance Help: Separate Decisions

Registered-Agent Service

A registered agent receives official notices and legal papers for your LLC.

Service of process means delivery of legal papers, such as notice of a lawsuit. The agent must meet your state’s requirements. [1, 21]

The role is required for a U.S. LLC, but hiring a commercial agent is a separate choice. A suitable individual may serve where state rules allow.

Florida, for example, allows an associated individual to serve and requires a physical Florida street address. [21]

If you travel or cannot reliably receive papers in the state, an outside agent may be useful. Think about who will be available to carry out that role.

A business mailing address serves a different purpose. Before buying either service, find out which address it provides and how you can use it.

For privacy concerns, look at which addresses your state makes public.

When changing agents, complete the state requirements and the provider’s cancellation requirements. Do not simply stop paying and leave the LLC without suitable coverage.

EIN Assistance

An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a federal tax identification number for a business. The IRS issues it without a fee.

A formation company’s charge pays for assistance with the application. [22]

Not every LLC has the same EIN requirement. For example, certain single-owner LLCs without employees or the relevant special taxes do not need one for federal tax purposes.

A bank or state requirement may still make an EIN necessary. Check the IRS guidance for your situation. [23]

The free online IRS application also has conditions. These include a U.S. principal place of business and the responsible person’s Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.

If you cannot use that tool, consult the IRS instructions for another application route. [22]

Once you understand the IRS requirements, you can decide whether assistance would be worth its price.

There is no need to buy EIN help simply because it appears in your formation order.

Compliance Reminders and Filing Services

A reminder tells you that a deadline is coming. A filing service prepares or submits a report. These are different levels of help.

A filing subscription may charge for the provider’s work while leaving government fees for you to pay separately.

You may also need to supply information before the provider can act. Keep your contact details current so you receive those requests.

Decide whether you need reminders, filing help, or neither. If you buy a service, put its charge date in your calendar alongside the state deadline.

9. Red Flags: What to Watch at Checkout

Take your time on the checkout pages. The following situations deserve a closer look, even when the provider is a legitimate company.

A trial is already selected. Remove it now if you do not want it. Leaving it selected creates another cancellation date to remember.

A required task is presented as a required purchase. Your business may need an EIN or registered agent. That does not automatically mean you must buy this company’s help.

Several services share one price. Find out which parts renew and whether you can cancel them separately. You also need to know how a partial cancellation affects the services you keep.

“Fast filing” sounds like guaranteed state approval. A company may promise to submit your papers quickly. The state still has to process them.

Make sure you know which stage the advertised speed covers.

The cancellation method is unclear. Read the written policy before buying. Save the order details, renewal terms, and any cancellation confirmation.

Northwest’s auto-pay terms set a deadline of at least one business day before the next charge, or before the compliance filing is submitted.

Do not wait until the state filing deadline to cancel its report service. [4]

ZenBusiness’s general terms say trial services charge automatically after the free period. Canceling later may stop future charges without refunding those already made.

Its refund rules also distinguish formation products, annual subscriptions, monthly subscriptions, and third-party costs. [24]

Bizee’s registered-agent terms require an agent change with the state and notice to Bizee before the existing service expires to avoid renewal.

This is separate from canceling a new formation order. [10]

10. When DIY Filing May Be Better

If your ownership arrangement is straightforward and you can manage the deadlines, filing yourself may be a sensible choice.

A paid package is not proof that you take your business seriously. Meeting the requirements correctly is what matters.

Start at your state’s official business filing office. Read through the form and fee information, including the agent requirements and later duties.

Florida’s official instructions and fee page show one example of this route. Your own state’s information should guide your filing. [2, 21]

You can file the formation papers yourself and still hire a registered agent separately. Choose the help for the task you actually need.

11. When a Lawyer or Tax Professional Is More Appropriate

Consider professional advice when the decision involves more than preparing a standard filing.

Examples include multiple owners with special agreements, ownership by someone outside the United States, or uncertainty about where the business must register.

For ownership rights and legal questions, speak with a qualified lawyer. For tax treatment, speak with a tax professional who can consider your circumstances.

Before engaging either, agree on the question they will address and the cost.

Do not choose a tax election because an advertisement promises savings. Creating an LLC does not automatically change every tax rule that applies to you. [23]

If you are unsure about a legal or tax decision, spend time clarifying it before ordering the filing. An advice appointment may answer a question that no formation bundle can settle.

12. Simple Decision Checklist

Before you pay, answer these questions in writing:

  • Have I decided that an LLC suits my business?
  • Have I read my state’s official filing instructions and considered DIY?
  • What does the base package actually include?
  • What is due now, including government fees?
  • What will renew, at what price, and on what date?
  • Have I removed trials and extras I do not want?
  • Can I meet the registered-agent requirements myself, or do I need outside help?
  • Have I checked EIN needs and the free IRS application route?
  • How do I cancel each ongoing service, and what charges are not refundable?
  • Do I need legal or tax advice before proceeding?

Your answers should make the next step clearer. You may be ready to file through the state, or you may have identified a task worth paying for.

For paid help, choose the smallest package that meets those needs. Save the order and put renewal dates in your calendar.

13. Key Points to Remember

  • Paid LLC formation help is optional. DIY remains a valid choice.
  • State fees, company fees, and ongoing services are separate costs.
  • Compare providers by your needs, including support and future charges.
  • A free offer may end before you expect. Review trials and renewals.
  • The IRS issues an EIN for free. Paid assistance is a separate choice.
  • Filing help does not replace legal or tax advice for a complex situation.
